Hooked From the First Rally: My Journey Into Padel

“I didn’t expect to fall in love with padel so quickly. But the first time I stepped on court, it clicked: fast rallies, constant laughter, and that addictive feeling of improving with every shot. Padel isn’t just easy to pick up — it’s one of the most social and fun games you’ll ever play. Once you try it, you’ll see why so many people are hooked.

The first time I ever came across padel was years ago in Spain. I remember seeing people on these enclosed glass courts, whizzing the ball around and laughing like they were having the time of their lives. It looked interesting, but I never gave it much more thought at the time. Fast forward to recently, and suddenly, padel was everywhere in Essex. Friends were talking about it, clubs were popping up, and my social feeds kept throwing clips of crazy rallies and trick shots my way. I couldn’t ignore it any longer — I was intrigued, and I knew I had to give it a go.

So, the first time I actually stepped onto a padel court in Essex, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d heard people describe it as “a mix between tennis and squash,” but that doesn’t really capture the magic of it. Within minutes of playing, I realised this wasn’t just another racket sport — padel had its own personality, its own rhythm, and it was impossible not to get hooked.

What struck me first was how quickly the game clicked. I’m not a pro by any stretch, but with padel, you don’t need to be. The smaller court, the glass walls, the lighter racket — it all makes sense in your hands almost instantly. Before long, I was rallying, laughing, and even pulling off shots I didn’t think I was capable of. That feeling of progress, right from the start, is addictive.

I still remember one point early on: the ball ricocheted off the back glass, my partner shouted, “Go for it!”, and somehow I connected perfectly. The shot went over the net, clipped the corner, and we actually won the rally. We all burst out laughing, half in disbelief, half in pure joy. That’s when I thought, okay, this game is special.

And then there’s the social side. Padel is always played in doubles, which means you’re never out there on your own. You’ve got a partner to share the highs, the mistakes, and those ridiculous points where the ball bounces off two walls and still somehow stays alive. It’s impossible not to enjoy yourself when the game is designed around teamwork. The Essex crowd I played with made it even better — friendly, welcoming, and up for a laugh no matter how competitive the points got.

The best part? It never feels like exercise, even though you’re constantly moving, sprinting, reacting, stretching, and laughing. By the end of a match, I can be sweating buckets, but I never once think of it as a workout — it’s just too much fun.

Over time, I realised padel isn’t just “tennis with walls.” It’s something unique. The tactics are different, the energy on court is different, and the atmosphere around the game feels warmer and more welcoming than most sports I’ve tried. That’s probably why so many people in Essex — and across the UK — once they play, never look back.
