Seven years ago we published a blog post titled “The Most Popular Game You’ve Never Heard Of” about this strange new sport called ‘Padel’
Back then, most people in the UK read it and thought: “Sounds fun… but I’ll probably never play it.”
Fast-forward to today — and literally everyone seems to know what padel is.
That’s not hype. That’s the cult of padel in full effect.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
According to the official FIP World Padel Report 2025 (published December 2025):
- 35+ million active players worldwide
- 77,300 courts globally (a 15.2% increase in just one year)
- 14,355 brand-new courts built in 2025 alone — that’s one new court every 36 minutes
- The sport is now played in 150 countries
In the UK the explosion has been even more dramatic:
- From just 50–68 courts in 2019 → over 1,130 courts by the end of 2025 (more than doubled in a single year)
- Player bookings on Playtomic more than doubled in 2025 (76k → 172k monthly players)
- The LTA estimates over 400,000 people played padel at least once in the last 12 months
What started as a quiet Spanish/Mexican import has become one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet.
So… Why Has Everyone Got the Padel Bug?
It’s simple. Padel hits the perfect sweet spot:
- It’s ridiculously social (doubles is the default)
- Fun and friendly sure – but can get extremely competitive!
- The walls keep the ball in play longer → longer rallies, fewer frustrating misses
- It’s easy to pick up in one session but insanely hard to master
- Low impact, high fun — perfect for 10-year-olds and 60-year-olds on the same court
- The “just one more game” feeling is dangerously real
Once you play, you get it. It’s addictive. That’s the cult part.
