Why Have You Never Played Padel?
Discover why this fast-growing, beginner-friendly sport is taking the UK and the world by storm
And why you’re missing out if you haven’t hit the court yet!
Padel is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Yet, despite its growing popularity, there are still plenty of people who have never even heard of it, let alone picked up a racket. So, what’s holding people back from trying this uniquely accessible, fun, and social sport?
What Exactly is Padel?
First things first, let’s clear up what padel is. A hybrid between tennis and squash, padel is played on an enclosed court roughly half the size of a tennis court. The scoring system is the same as tennis, but unlike its older sibling, the walls are part of the game, allowing for dynamic, fast-paced rallies. With a smaller, perforated racket and a low-compression ball, padel emphasizes strategy and placement over sheer power, making it beginner-friendly and accessible for all ages and skill levels.
So why isn’t everyone playing it?
Lack of Exposure
One of the biggest reasons you might not have played padel is simply because you’ve never had the chance. While padel has exploded in countries like Spain, Argentina, and even Sweden, it’s only just beginning to gain traction in countries like the UK and the US. Tennis courts are everywhere, but padel courts are still a rarity in many regions. For most people, it’s a matter of access – they’ve never played because they’ve never seen a padel court, let alone been invited to try it.
PDL Padel United are working on this and we are expanding with new centres and courts opening soon and plans for expansion in the pipeline – watch this space – we may be coming to your town.

The Name Game
Another barrier could be its unfamiliar name. Padel doesn’t have the immediate recognition that sports like tennis, squash, or even pickleball do. People tend to stick with what they know, and if they haven’t heard of padel, they’re less likely to seek it out. In fact, many people who might love the game don’t even know it exists!
As we have said before – its the most popular game you have never heard of…
Perception of Tennis as a Rival
There’s often a misconception that padel is just “tennis-lite,” something less serious or competitive. Tennis players might feel they don’t need to pick up another racket sport, while non-tennis players could be intimidated, thinking padel requires the same level of skill or athleticism. But the truth is, padel offers something different – it’s social, less about brute force, and more about angles and tactics, perfect for players of all abilities.
It’s New, and New Can Be Intimidating
Trying something new can feel daunting, and padel is still relatively new to many markets. It’s easy to stick to your comfort zone, whether that’s tennis, football, or even just hitting the gym. But the beauty of padel is that it’s designed to be inclusive. The learning curve is short, and within minutes of stepping on the court, you’ll be trading rallies and having a blast.
Not Enough Friends Playing
Most people’s first introduction to a sport is through friends or family. If your immediate social circle hasn’t caught the padel bug yet, there’s a good chance it hasn’t even crossed your radar. Padel is inherently social, played in doubles, which means it thrives when groups of friends discover it together. Once one friend gets hooked, it’s usually only a matter of time before the whole group joins in.
The Fitness Landscape is Crowded
We live in a world where new fitness trends pop up almost weekly. From CrossFit to yoga, from spinning to bouldering, there’s always a new class or activity promising to keep you in shape. Amid all this noise, padel can easily get overlooked as just another option in an already crowded fitness market. But unlike many sports that require solo commitment, padel is a social sport that encourages group play, making it an attractive alternative to both traditional racket sports and trendy workouts.
But Why Should You Try Padel?
Padel’s charm lies in its simplicity, accessibility, and the sheer fun of playing it. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone who’s never held a racket, padel is easy to pick up and incredibly social. You don’t need to invest in expensive gear or lessons, and the emphasis on strategy over power means you won’t spend your first few games picking up balls every few seconds. Plus, once you try it, you’ll quickly realize why it’s so addictive – the short, fast-paced rallies and the social nature of doubles play make it hard not to love.
So, why haven’t you played padel yet? Maybe it’s time to give it a go – who knows, it might just become your new favorite sport!
